On September 17, PT Hutama Karya Infrastruktur (HKI) officially entered into a collaboration with the Faculty of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Institut Teknologi Bandung (ITB). The partnership was formalized through the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), held in conjunction with the launch of the Center for Infrastructure & Built Environment (CIBE) at the ITB Campus in Bandung.

“The scope of this collaboration includes training, development, and research activities related to Lean Construction within HKI,” said Fatma Dewi Setyowati, Director of Operations I at HKI. She explained that this partnership is a follow-up to the implementation of Lean Construction in one of HKI’s project segments, namely the Pekanbaru–Dumai Toll Road Section 2A. “Management has seen positive results from applying Lean Construction in that section, which led us to the conclusion that this working philosophy and method should be adopted more broadly and systematically across our other projects,” she added.

Previously, HKI had successfully implemented Lean Construction to accelerate the completion of one of the critical tasks in the Pekanbaru–Dumai Section 2A project, specifically the underpass at STA 28+150. “By applying Lean Thinking principles through Lean Construction, we were able to significantly reduce delays—even though this was implemented mid-project. We believe that implementing Lean Construction from the planning phase in future toll road projects under the Trans-Sumatra Toll Road (JTTS) program, such as the 36.5 km Pekanbaru–Bangkinang and 65 km Indralaya–Prabumulih segments, will produce even better outcomes,” Fatma said.

About PT Hutama Karya Infrastruktur (HKI)

PT Hutama Karya Infrastruktur (HKI) is a subsidiary of the state-owned enterprise PT Hutama Karya (Persero). Established in 2015, HKI was formed to maximize the benefits of the Indonesian Government’s assignment to Hutama Karya in developing the Trans-Sumatra Toll Road (JTTS).

Since its establishment, HKI has continued to deliver strong corporate performance. By the end of 2018, HKI recorded a Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) of 143.32% in revenue and 138% in net profit, driven by increasing project contracts under the JTTS program and the company’s proven capability in delivering high-quality toll road construction.

HKI has completed the Palembang–Indralaya segment (22 km), as well as Sections 2 and 3 of the Medan–Binjai Toll Road (6 km and 4.5 km, respectively). Currently, the company is working on the Pekanbaru–Dumai Toll Road (131.4 km), targeted for completion by the end of 2019, and the Padang–Sicincin segment. HKI has also secured new contracts for the Pekanbaru–Bangkinang and Indralaya–Prabumulih segments.

With ongoing JTTS construction plans extending for years to come, HKI continues to innovate across all business sectors, aiming to enhance operational efficiency and effectiveness, ultimately optimizing value for shareholders and other stakeholders.

About Lean Construction

Lean Construction is a method for designing construction project work systems that can identify waste (inefficiency) so that anything that does not add value can be minimized or eliminated. The goal of applying Lean Construction is to optimize project execution, considering common obstacles such as material delays, ineffective human resources, and waste management issues, which often hinder the smooth completion of projects.
Although Lean Construction is not yet widely implemented in Indonesia’s construction industry, due to its relatively unfamiliar principles, its positive impact can be significant when applied correctly. Benefits include improved performance, safety, and ultimately, more cost-efficient project execution.
