Pekanbaru – PT Hutama Karya Infrastruktur (HKI) has completed part of the Pekanbaru-Bangkinang Toll Road, one of the sections in the Trans Sumatra Toll Road (JTTS) Pekanbaru-Padang segment. HKI has successfully finished 31 km of the total 40 km of the toll road.
In the construction of the Pekanbaru-Bangkinang Toll Road, HKI implemented Building Information Modeling (BIM) as per the directive issued by the Toll Road Regulatory Agency, aligning with the Ministry of Public Works and Public Housing's support for digital construction in Indonesia to accelerate infrastructure development. This initiative is supported by the government through regulations, human resource development, innovative funding, and the application of research results and technology, in this case, BIM implementation.
Building Information Modeling (BIM) is a digital, three-dimensional representation of the actual building plan, which can be viewed using Virtual Reality (VR). The 3D model contains all the information needed by stakeholders to make decisions at every stage of construction.
The implementation of BIM on the Pekanbaru-Bangkinang Toll Road project has been applied in planning the main road, structures (overpasses, underpasses, bridges, box traffic, box drains), simulation scheduling, and cost estimating. In the field, some tasks have already used work drawings as outputs from BIM, unlike before, which relied on manual drawings.
With BIM and the Common Data Environment (CDE) platform, the document approval process can now be done anytime and anywhere. BIM is also used to compare plans with actual field work in terms of work volume, costs, and scheduling.
With the implementation of BIM, the construction process can become more efficient. Tasks that would typically require multiple personnel over a set period can now be completed in a shorter timeframe using the BIM system. For example, the process of creating structural shop drawings for bridges, calculating concrete and reinforcement volumes, determining work stages, and computing overall quantities can all be streamlined. Using BIM, a highway project covering a 5 km section—handled by a single person—can be completed within 15 days, from drafting the drawings to calculating the volumes. Meanwhile, bridge structure works can be completed in approximately 10 days. "One of the other key benefits lies in the significantly more precise and accurate volume calculations, as the system can interpret structural forms in detail based on the planned model. As a result, BIM implementation in toll road construction helps reduce both project duration and overall costs," said Selo Tjahjono, Director of Operations III.
The use of BIM in the Pekanbaru-Bangkinang Toll Road project has earned recognition from the Ministry of Public Works and Housing during the 2021 National Road Day celebration. HKI won second place in the Road and Bridge Technology Innovation Competition through a video presentation. In the 4-minute 30-second video, the Pekanbaru-Bangkinang Project Team explained how BIM assists the field team in planning and constructing the toll road.
BIM implementation at HKI is part of the company's commitment to digitizing business processes. In addition to BIM, HKI has also implemented SAP-based Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) for digital transaction processes. HKI’s digital business process is an active step towards becoming a leading integrated construction company in Indonesia.
