North Sumatra – PT Hutama Karya Infrastruktur (HKI) continues the construction of the Binjai – Pangkalan Brandan Toll Road. Previously, HKI completed the Binjai – Stabat segment (12.5 km), which has been operational since 2022, followed by the Stabat – Kuala Bingai – Tanjung Pura segment (25 km), which commenced operations in 2023. Currently, HKI is accelerating the construction of the 19.36 km Tanjung Pura – Pangkalan Brandan segment.

As of the end of May 2024, construction progress on the Tanjung Pura – Pangkalan Brandan segment has reached 92.05%. “This toll road will feature two toll gates located in Tanjung Pura and Pangkalan Brandan respectively, and one pair of rest areas at KM 41 on both sides (A and B), equipped with MSME kiosks and tenant spaces, public and accessible toilets, a mosque, ATMs, and designated space for a fuel station. With this progress, the entire 57 km Binjai – Pangkalan Brandan Toll Road is expected to be completed soon,” said HKI Director of Operations III, Aditya Novendra Jaya.

During the construction process, HKI encountered a challenge where the toll road alignment crosses a natural gas pipeline owned by PT Pertamina Gas. To safeguard the pipeline from potential soil movement, HKI implemented protective measures using soldier piles and steel structures. Geotextiles were also used to shield the pipeline from direct sun exposure.

Construction at the pipeline crossing was carried out using a box crossing method, supported by embankments calculated with careful technical and safety considerations. This box crossing method, with its specific treatment to cross a natural gas pipeline, marks the first of its kind among all Trans-Sumatra Toll Road projects.

Additionally, HKI addressed several soft soil spots using methods such as prefabricated vertical drains (PVD), prefabricated horizontal drains (PHD), pile embankments, preloading, and pile slabs.

“In delivering the Trans-Sumatra Toll Road, HKI is committed to achieving the best results despite significant challenges. We hope for continued support and prayers so we can complete the Tanjung Pura – Pangkalan Brandan segment successfully and on time,” Aditya concluded.

Currently, HKI is also working on several other Trans-Sumatra Toll Road (JTTS) projects including the Padang – Sicincin Toll Road, the Palembang – Indralaya Junction, the Pekanbaru Ring Road, and the Betung – Jambi Section 4. HKI is also building rest area facilities on the Pekanbaru – Dumai Toll Road and the Bengkulu – Taba Penanjung Toll Road. Beyond JTTS, HKI is currently involved in non-toll road projects such as the SMO Construction Services project in PHR Riau, the Probolinggo – Banyuwangi Toll Road Package II, and the Cikampek Selatan Toll Road Package 2A.
