North Sumatra – PT Hutama Karya Infrastruktur (HKI), a subsidiary of PT Hutama Karya (Persero) (Hutama Karya), has fully completed the construction of the Tanjung Pura – Pangkalan Brandan segment of the Binjai – Pangkalan Brandan Toll Road, spanning 19.5 kilometers, achieving 100% construction progress.
President Director of HKI, Aji Prasetyanti, explained that the construction of the Tanjung Pura – Pangkalan Brandan Toll Road successfully passed the Functional Feasibility Test (ULF) on Thursday and Friday (28-29/11) in collaboration with several institutions, including representatives from the Ministry of Public Works, Ministry of Transportation, and the Traffic Corps of the Indonesian National Police.
“Alhamdulillah, at the end of November, the Tanjung Pura – Pangkalan Brandan Toll Road successfully passed the Functional Feasibility Test (ULF). This marks that the toll road is ready to enhance connectivity for the people of North Sumatra, specifically,” said Aji.
The Tanjung Pura – Pangkalan Brandan Toll Road will be operational during the 2024 Christmas and 2025 New Year holidays to ease access for residents traveling between Binjai and Pangkalan Brandan, significantly reducing travel time.
“With the completion of this toll road, the journey from Binjai City to Pangkalan Brandan, which previously took 2 hours via the national road, can now be completed in just 40 minutes. This reduces travel time by approximately 1 hour and 20 minutes,” Aji added.
As the main contractor, HKI has been working on the Binjai – Pangkalan Brandan Toll Road since 2020, divided into three segments. The first segment, Binjai – Stabat Toll Road (12.5 km), has been operational since 2022. The second segment, Stabat – Kuala Bingai Toll Road (7.5 km), began operations in October 2023, while the Kuala Bingai – Tanjung Pura Toll Road (19 km) has been in operation since January 2024. The third segment, Tanjung Pura – Pangkalan Brandan Toll Road (18.9 km), is now ready for functional use by the end of 2024.
In constructing the Tanjung Pura – Pangkalan Brandan Toll Road, HKI faced a challenge where the toll road route intersected with natural gas pipelines. Construction at this section was carried out using a box crossing method with embankment work conducted based on thorough technical calculations and precise safety considerations. As a result, vehicles can now safely pass through the gas pipeline crossing area.
In addition to building the toll road, HKI has constructed a pair of rest areas located near the iconic JTTS (Trans-Sumatra Toll Road) landmark in North Sumatra, the Sei Wampu Bridge. These rest areas are equipped with complete facilities, including public and disability-friendly restrooms, parking spaces, MSME (Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises) tenants, a mosque, a food court, a clinic for medical assistance, and a workshop for vehicle mechanical services. The rest area architecture reflects local cultural elements, combining the traditional motifs of Melayu, Aceh, and Batak Karo in its design.
“Connectivity from Medan to Pangkalan Brandan is now fully connected via the Medan – Binjai Toll Road, seamlessly integrated with the Binjai – Pangkalan Brandan Toll Road and equipped with comprehensive facilities. We extend our gratitude and appreciation to all parties who have collaborated in completing this toll road,” Aji concluded.
