Serbia – PT Hutama Karya Infrastruktur (HKI) gained attention at the Green Building 2024 Conference held on Wednesday (05/06) at the Faculty of Civil Engineering & Architecture, University of Nis, Serbia. HKI had the honor of representing Indonesia by presenting its innovations in sustainable construction alongside 48 teams from various countries.

Focusing on scientific and practical achievements in architecture, urban planning, and sustainable development, the Green Building 2024 Conference aimed to reduce overall environmental impact, waste, pollution, and degradation. “On this occasion, HKI presented two scientific papers titled ‘The Potential of Carbon Reduction Using Hollow Bridge Pier with GR. 550 MPA Steel in Earthquake-Prone Regions’ and ‘Electrical Density Gauge (EDG) for Quick Quality Control Approach in Soil Compaction,’” stated HKI President Director, Aji Prasetyanti.

These two papers are the results of research conducted by Hutama Karya’s System and Technology Information Department and HKI’s Engineering and Design Department in collaboration with academics from Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB) and Sebelas Maret University (UNS). While the EDG technology has already been implemented in several projects on the Trans Sumatra Toll Road (JTTS), the carbon reduction innovation using hollow bridge piers is still undergoing testing and will be further implemented in the future.

“The EDG technology has been applied in five JTTS projects developed by HKI. Two completed projects include the Indralaya-Prabumulih Toll Road and Bangkinang-Pangkalan Toll Road. Meanwhile, three other ongoing projects include the Padang-Sicincin Toll Road, Binjai-Pangkalan Brandan Toll Road, and Pekanbaru Ring Road,” Aji explained.

Through a scientific poster on EDG, HKI demonstrated its function in determining soil moisture and density more rapidly, with accuracy levels acceptable as a substitute for the conventional sand cone test. EDG results can be used for internal quality control in construction projects, offering an efficient and effective solution by reducing testing time.

Notably, HKI’s EDG technology has also been showcased in the Indonesia Infrastructure Research & Innovation Institute (I2RI) program, which involves participation from state-owned enterprises, private sectors, and academia. This technology has been recognized as an innovation in soil density and is being applied by HKI as the first user in Indonesia.

Moreover, HKI’s carbon reduction innovation using hollow bridge piers combines hollow concrete piers with high-strength 550 MPa steel bars. Laboratory tests have shown that this combination significantly reduces CO2 emissions by decreasing raw material usage due to the hollow pier structure while ensuring reliable performance through the use of high-strength steel.

Aji emphasized that participation in the conference demonstrates HKI’s commitment to advancing innovations in construction technology that are applicable, environmentally friendly, and globally competitive.

“After presenting our research at the Green Building 2024 Conference, we plan to refine our studies and implement these proposed innovations in future HKI projects. This event also proves that sustainable construction is not just a concept but a reality that can be achieved through collaboration and strong commitment. HKI is dedicated to continuous innovation and playing a pivotal role in promoting sustainable development in Indonesia,” Aji concluded.
