Riau – PT Hutama Karya Infrastruktur (HKI) continues the construction of the Trans-Sumatra Toll Road (JTTS) project, including the Rengat–Pekanbaru section, specifically the Pekanbaru Ring Road, spanning 30.57 km. The project, which began in June 2023, is targeted for completion in 2026.

“As of September 2024, construction progress for this toll road has reached approximately 30%,” said Aditya Novendra Jaya, HKI's Director of Operations III.

Aditya further explained that the Pekanbaru Ring Road Toll is designed to feature three toll gates and three interchanges: Rimbo Panjang Toll Gate and Interchange, Siak Toll Gate and Interchange, and Pekanbaru Bypass Toll Gate and Interchange. Rimbo Panjang Toll Gate and Interchange serves as the main access for Rimbo Panjang residents, Siak Gate facilitates access for the Sri Meranti area, and the Pekanbaru Bypass Gate provides access for Muara Fajar residents and surrounding areas. Additionally, the toll will include Rimbo Junction (or Pekanbaru Junction), connecting the Pekanbaru – Bangkinang Toll Road with the Pekanbaru Ring Road.

“In the future, Pekanbaru residents and others traveling on the Pekanbaru – Bangkinang Toll Road can seamlessly continue to the Pekanbaru – Dumai Toll Road and vice versa without exiting the toll road. This will enhance direct intercity connectivity and significantly reduce travel time,” Aditya noted. The toll road will cut travel time from the Bangkinang – Pekanbaru toll exit to the Pekanbaru – Dumai toll gate from one hour on the national road to just 25 minutes via the Pekanbaru Ring Road.

HKI will also construct a pair of rest areas with a total area of 12 hectares, which are currently in the planning phase. These rest areas will be located approximately five kilometers from the Siak Toll Gate and are planned to feature architectural elements inspired by Riau’s local cultural heritage. Planned facilities include space for fuel stations, parking areas for both large and small vehicles, vehicle maintenance workshops, a minimarket, a mosque, public restrooms, retail tenants, a food court, 12 MSME kiosks, a playground and green open space, as well as a clinic for drivers in need of medical assistance.

For your information, HKI’s scope of work on the Pekanbaru Ring Road Toll Project includes the toll road structure, three river bridges, a pair of rest areas, a toll office, and three toll gates. The toll road is planned to have a lane width of 3.6 meters, with two lanes in each direction (2×2) during the initial phase and three lanes in each direction (2×3) in the final phase, with a design speed of 100 km/h.

One of the iconic bridges constructed by HKI is the Siak River Bridge, which spans a total length of 214 meters with a main span of 97.5 meters. The bridge uses the balanced cantilever method, which involves building out from both ends of the span in stages until they meet in the middle, forming a structurally balanced bridge. The design also eliminates the need for piers in the middle of the river to help preserve the surrounding environment and ensure unimpeded passage for cargo ships underneath.

HKI has also fully implemented digital construction technologies in the Pekanbaru Ring Road Toll Project, including Building Information Modelling (BIM), terrestrial laser scanners (TLS), load scanners, photogrammetry, electronic density gauges (EDG), and the HKI APPS platform. The use of these technologies is expected to enhance efficiency and effectiveness throughout all phases of construction.

“In developing the Trans-Sumatra Toll Road (JTTS), HKI remains committed to delivering the best results and quality despite the challenges. We hope that the construction of the Rengat – Pekanbaru Toll Road, Pekanbaru Ring Road section, progresses smoothly and can soon be utilized by the public,” Aditya concluded.
